The real thing.

So the X-Prize in Seattle was cool — but the actual Space Ship One is now hanging in the Smithsonian — a tad cooler. Right between The Spirit of St. Louis and the X-1.

On a quick visit to Seattle I came across this award for going into space:

Just taking a moment to share this pretty view of Earth I found while playing with 3D Weather Globe and Atlas.

I was looking for the Saab factory, of course.

Return of the Art

December 18th, 2005 by Hans

Years ago I lived in a very nice live-work loft in Oakland — it really loved the large open space and tons of windows. It had huge walls — and so I made some artwork for them. Using my medium of skill, Photoshop, I created a whirl of color on a black background. And then another to match. Printing them out on 100 little letter-size sheets (each) I titled them together on huge pieces of foam-core, and hung them on the wall.

I got many compliments on them, and enjoyed looking at them. They have always reminded me of the photographs of atom smashing, with their intwined circular lines. When I moved out and into a relatively tiny apartment during the dot-com-boom I left them out on the street for free, and before five-minutes they were gone. I wonder where they have gone.

Well needing art for our home on Hayes Street, and remembering my fondness for these designs I searched out the files. It took forever to find them among my archives of data, in fact they were on an old OS 9 iMac. Once found I popped them into iPhoto and sent them out for photo-prints. A tad smaller than they had been, now 20″ by 30″. They’re now hanging in our parlor, I’m very much enjoying having them on display again.

de Young opening

As a special celebration for the opening of the completely re-built de Young museum — it stay open all night long with dancing and DJs. A wonderful San Francisco event with literally hundreds of thousands of folk.

Yay, Joss.

A quick vacation.

September 17th, 2005 by Hans

This week Mark and I decided we couldn’t wait any longer for vacation. We had to take one now. We had to get away and do nothing, or nearly nothing, for at least a whole day. So we booked ourselves a yuppie tent on the Pacific Coast at Costanoa, quickly re-scheduled our work, and took off.

It was fantastic. So good that we’re going to force ourselves to take a vacation of some sort at least ever two months, even a short one like this. Only 50 miles done the coast and across from the Ano Nuevo state reserve — so close and so pretty. It was foggy and cold when we arrived , but our next day there is got super sunny and warm. We hiked in the nearby mountains and then down to the shore to see the Sea Lions.

Of course we had to rush back and see our cats.

Why all the blogs?

August 11th, 2005 by Hans

I’ve been asked a few times, “why so many blogs, why not just one?” as if having lots of blogs is lots of trouble.

I guess that’d just be too disorganized for me. I like my blogs to tell stories and I like them to have different personalities. So I have them for different parts of my eclectic life. I have a general one, this is that. I have one for my sail boat, it started the blogging trend. I have one for my interest in printing and design, emphasizing my letterpress. I have one for the hobby I spend the most time (and money) on: video games. And I have one for my life’s work with Macintosh computers. I also maintain a .mac homepage of photo albums for my enjoyment of photography.

I have a few others too. That I either own, edit, or merely contribute. There’s the house blog for stories and things related to our flat in Hayes Valley. There’s the one for Mark and my impending wedding celebration. There’s the Politics & Cocktails group blog, also known as Hayes Street Working Group. And there’s an odd one devoted to our love of small fuzzy bears from the future.

And while I’m at it I’ll plug a couple blogs that my family and friends have. My partner Mark has a couple: a personal blog, a liberal politics blog, a blog of crazy urban drama, and a blog for his work in his dissertation. My friend derrick, is the king of blogs with his obsession with food blog read by thousands of people, and his smaller personal blog.

Logo maniac

August 6th, 2005 by Hans

I’ve rediscovered my passion for building thing out of little Danish blocks. Okay so currently I’m in the Star Wars phase, but I intend to go beyond it into crazy new places.

Part of the joy of logos — at lest when building from the pre-designed sets — are the complex kits. And when I learned that you could order super big crazy sets directly from Lego, I went crazy.

This Star Destory in process has 3104 pieces. It’s about 3 feet long and 40 lbs. Totally cool!

Firefly returns.

Yes my favorite TV show is coming to the big screen. Joss Whedon’s sci-fi series is coming back in the feature film Serenity. And here’s the first broadsheet!

Interesting that River is so prominent — always suspected that her mysteriousness would be the central plot of the film. Opening September 30th.
